Implementation Guide

We developed the LCEsmartr Playbook to guide and accelerate reliability improvements. Transformational improvements start with building a vision of the future, preparing and building teams to implement and manage the change, then living in the new reality. The Implementation Guide explains this journey to proactive operations in five phases and shares key actions with management resources in each phase.

5 Phase Implementation

Reliability Engineering
Reliability Engineering is the single-point accountability function for risk, loss elimination and life cycle asset management. A strategic function reports either through the engineering organization or directly to senior management. Reliability Engineering is primarily a strategic activity focused on the future.
Maintenance Management
To fulfill its mission effectively, the maintenance function depends on reliable and prompt material support (spares, replacement parts, supplies and special tools). These are either stored in the form of inventory or purchased from outside vendors as the need arises. In either case, the best maintenance program in the world will fail without an effective materials management process.
Shutdowns, Turnarounds, and Outages
We want to give management a strong case to improve the processes for running shutdowns. While the revenue and expense sides are both important, one side is usually more important for a particular site, company, or product. This STO work stream has proven, through many successful implementations, to provide a considerable return on investment (ROI).
Work Management
An effective work management process screens out the unnecessary and unimportant activities, establishes responsibility for planning, execution of work, reduces mistakes, and provides a universal understanding of what is to be done, and the priority sequence that is to be followed.
Capital Delivery
Nearly all organizations understand the need to have capital project processes, practices, procedure manuals, or other defined methods as part of managing their business. Most organizations do not have a defined approach to building in Reliability, or a mechanism to drive lowest total cost of ownership (TCO). Lastly, they have a limited view on managing operating risk during capital delivery.
Design for Reliability
The overall DfR process begins with the interaction of Capital Delivery with the Conceptual Design process, and ends with Commission and Validation process. Typically, the business owner drives the need/utilization of DfR methods. The business owner making a capital investment wants to maximize ROI over the life cycle of the asset.

Assessments

LCEsmartr’s online self-assessment tool will give you a snapshot of your current reliability processes and practices. Our process is based on a standard set of questionnaires that quantify attributes of the manufacturing operation including fixed assets, work processes, information systems and human resources.

Assessment Opportunities
The self-assessments in LCEsmartr ask users to examine current processes and practices at their site and compare them to industry best practices. The assessment results share how your team perceives the operations’ current performance, and can be used to support a business case for improvement and a plan to close identified gaps.
